This circuit demonstrates why a inductor passes current on DC and NOT AC. Throw the switch and leave it. See the current increase and flatten out. Move the switch back and forth and see how the current doesn't have a chance to rise. The magnetic field is constantly changing inducing an opposition to the current flow.
