It often helps if we re-draw the schematic to obtain a clearer view.... see how this re-drawn effort of mine shows the current dots flowing easily from the battery through the potentiometer arrow to the LED. Then when we slide the pot arrow to the left, the battery current dots have a longer harder journey through the pot to get to the LED .... it's that pot extra resistance which makes the journey harder, and the light dimmer... http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4615349990588416
