A two-way switch is an electrical switch that can control a light fixture or other electrical device from two different locations. It's commonly used in stairways, hallways, and large rooms where you want to be able to turn the lights on and off from multiple points.
How it works:
A two-way switch has three terminals:
1. Common terminal: Connects to the light fixture or electrical device.
2. Traveler terminals: Connect to the other two-way switch.
When you flip one switch, it connects the common terminal to one of the traveler terminals, turning the light on or off. The other switch then mirrors the state of the first switch.
Types of two-way switches:
1. Single-pole double-throw (SPDT): The most common type of two-way switch.
2. Double-pole double-throw (DPDT): Used for controlling two separate circuits.
Wiring a two-way switch:
Wiring a two-way switch can be a bit tricky, but it's a DIY-friendly project. You'll need to connect the switches, the light fixture, and the power source according to the manufacturer's instructions and local electrical codes.
