The top layout of components is superior to the bottom, since with the bottom layout losing an LED increases the current throughout the circuit.  (Opening the switch on one of the LED paths simulates losing an LED.)   Also note that higher power must be dissipated, in the form of heat, by the single resistor of the bottom layout.
