It's almost never more then 2 switches. If you try using the left switch with the 2 center ones either closed closer together or farther apart, you can see why (as long as the right most switch is closed on the correct corresponding path based on the two center switches. If the three switches on the right are closed in 2 different configurations then the left switch will not turn the lamp off.

Click on my username and I modified it and you'll see it is much less complex then you may think (based on this circuit) and I also just changed voltage and lamp voltages to fit U.S.
