Reminds me of many years ago when I was an electrical engineering apprentice. Many of the cables were still not yet replaced with PVC. They were either VRI (Vulcanised Rubber Insulated) or TRS (Tough Rubber Sheaved). We learned to carefully cut round the rubber ends with a penknife that we each kept very sharp on grindstones which were available to us at the factory. The slightest nick through to the metal wire meant that we had to start the end all over again. We ran a double cable along hallways and stairs for your job here. We then had to cover the black ends in red sleeves so that future electricians would not assume that the wire was connected to a negative. Enough of my ranting for now....here is a simplified schematic similar to yours: http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4966743537090560. The switch was always on the positive side for mains wiring.

Yes, always have the switch on the positive side of the mains, a dead short would mean the light is always on. This circuit is dangerous in real life, especially if the bulb broke inside the socket.
