Trying to explain to a 10 year old why the bulbs are not as bright in the series circuit. Can you?

1) Get rid of all the voltmeters from the schematics, they are too visually confusing rather than helpful. 2 ) Without any diagrams at all, explain V=IR as a fun Maths lesson until he/she can do I=V/R easily. 3) Now state that the brightness of similar bulbs will depend on the current I in that formula. 4) Use just two similar bulbs and the same battery at all times. Wire them in series, then parallel. 5) Only do all that if he/she is keen, and if you haven't finished in half an hour, then continue tomorrow. 6) If all goes well the move on to W=VI and use three, then four bulbs. Let him/her do the Math/wiring. Don't push or get annoyed if they can't grasp any aspect. Keep it fun and full of praise and encouragement. Keep casually repeating that V is measured across each bulb and I can be calculated through it, knowing the same R for each. With their new Maths ability, they will soon be skilled at finding I in any circuit, and so relate it to the bulb brightness. Find R yourself before you start, and give them the same R value rounded to the nearest easy number to use at all times. Eventually, they may enquire about that R value which you gave them to use throughout....and then you are both ready to continue past this stage......(to explain about resistors).

I qualified as a teacher from Oxford University and taught 10 year olds in school for about 8 years before becoming a University lecturer in Statistics with extra work teaching at an Engineering college. I was a drop out after 3 years Electrical Engineering apprenticeship in the swinging 60s and did various jobs before getting down to some serious study. Electronics is my hobby, I am not an expert.

Hello again 2ctiby, interested to hear your background :-)

Hi Robert, I thought it was time to let people know why I perhaps sound as though I know things (many years teaching habit...sorry all). Hurz took a real hard effort step forward the other day and I thought it only fair to look at my own faults and at least declare one or two. Perhaps if you also can state that you genuinely hold no malice against someone who has given you a hard time then we can all start afresh knowing that we are all just human, hopefully finding the right way while there is time.

What is this 'real hard effort'? Give me a link, as I'd like to see it. I've tried making peace with Hurz several times in the last two weeks. He never responds so I'm close to giving up for good.

I invited Hurz to do a turnaround and stop insulting. I also asked him to check out one of my links because I thought it may not be working. In the follow up banter he replied saying my links were ok and later even offered a respect mention. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4977031934115840 ....that was a big step forward for Hurz compared to his usual remarks. I am hoping that he will continue, seeing how he may now realize that hate can only lead to destruction. You and I have perhaps suffered more than anyone from his insults, but a show of compassion will hopefully demonstrate at this point that there is a better way....and we are called on to feel that and show it rather than give ourselves over to the very same hate that we are complaining about. I see a spark of hope and am holding on to it just now.

I hate fraud's and trool's and this will not change. Good to see you start to realize that!

Hurz, be very careful. Self-loathing is potentially very destructive!

Robbi, again you deleted commtes by accident? Or was it to much alcohol yesterday? If you feel addressed as fraud or troll, its your personal problem.

Meh!

Hurz you're not trying. You keep using the word fraud, but I have often stated that I am not an electronics expert. If you are inferring that I am a fraud in my teaching subjects than we can soon check that out and show who is inferior in those subjects...you will look very silly then...I suggest that you stop calling people a fraud before we put you to the test!

Hurz has a pretty good knowledge of electronics but is too keen to judge and make comments on people he knows nothing of. He's devoid of any humanity, most people on this forum detest him. In short, a moron who is not worth bothering with.

Hurz, I couldn't give a damn what you think of me or my circuits and comments. You really are insignificant. I wouldn't piss in your ear if your brain was on fire.

2ctiby, you will, of course, decide for yourself but I would advise you to throw in the towel. He's simply not worth the effort.
