The advantage of a full-wave rectifier over a half-wave is quite clear. The capacitor can more effectively reduce the ripple when the time between peaks is shorter.

Filter caps aren't that small in magnitude.

@fatcat2 in come cases, they are. Values as low as 1uF are typically used to filtering high voltages, like at the input of an SMPS (a low power one). Sure, it is not suitable for his application, but such small filter caps are used.
