The contactor auxiliary contacts are normally used to eliminate the relay.

Agreed. I had originally wired the circuit just as you are describing. However, this is simply an electronic representation of an actual project we are working on. I was instructed to wire the project as shown because we will be adding many more features to the circuit each week, and will require a 120V control circuit-relay, and a 240V load circuit-contactor. Redundent now, but needed later. Thank you for your input! :)
