We say that ac is better for transmission as dc gives high voltage drops. But considering transmission wire purely resistive, power loss is same.

AC is not better for transmission of power. Beside resistance to overcome AC does cause loosing energy in capacitive and inductive form. However, AC can easily transformed up and down. DC needs also the same high voltage as AC to overcome resistive loss but its much more complicated to do up and down converting. This has a little changed in the last decades but is still valid. So DC is only used for some special transfer lines. In Germany we have some lines in the north sea. But normaly AC is prefered!
