The left switch would be a key switch to power the entire system.  The push button represents the thumb switch to quickly turn on or off the relay. 

This configuration would only waste energy when the key switch is on and the thumb button isn't pushed.

Use a Push Button NO switch instead of the NC switch you are currently using. Also, switch pwr to the left node of the relay switch. And it wont waste pwr.

Older golf carts had heavy duty adjustable resistor control to turn on and control speed of cart. Used on home brew battery powered motorcycles as well when you are ready to upgrade.
