Nice work, a couple of tips. 1. The 555 specifications state that the timing resistors should be between 1k and 1M. 2. As you have found, making the top resistor smaller than the bottom one helps to give an even waveform. 3. The led resistor should only allow about 20 mA to flow through the led. Other than that it is not too bad a circuit.
