From website The "Joule Thief" circuit that does not use a transformer to power LED from a single 1.5V battery cell. The circuit consists of two bipolar transistors, coil, two resistors and capacitor to generate higher voltage through 50KHz frequency to power an ordinary LED. Entire circuit draws only about 15 milliamp Source http://electronics-diy.com/transformerless-joule-thief.php

This circuit is great but not as tiny joule thief, but his place is in multipulse type thyristor ignition apparatus. To this day I only know such circuits build used UJT transistor, Anode gate thyristor or Shockley diode. But this circuit is brilliant and can replace those hard to obtain devices by simple transistors and do not over extend circuit complexity or used parts count.

I'll give this circuit a 9/10 score !!!!! It is EXCELLENT :-) one of few here whose really catch my attention.

Cool circuit! Ive seen several JTs with just a coil vs an xformer and they look interesting. Very good job here!

The Joule Thief circuit is composed of a battery, a resistor, a transformer, a transistor and a load. Nothing else!

Only works down to .8v leaving plenty joules behind😼
