Car radios back in the day had to get high voltage for the vacuum tube anodes, and used a relay-like device known as a vibrator, that would modulate (chop) the DC voltage of the car battery/alternator into the primary winding of a step up transformer. Interesting mechanical engineering before they had solid state devices.
