Buck-boost converter

An old circuit I dug up. The blue trace is the (negative) output voltage. Buck-boost converters are similar to the converters they get their name from. They're capable of stepping a voltage up or down in the negative range, making them more versatile than bucks or boosts but harder to configure.

Why in this configuration it is operating in discontinuous conduction - for duty cycle below 20%?

I haven't fully worked out the maths yet, but it seems the cap (500 uF) is too low for the extremely low frequency (500 Hz). Unfortunately higher frequency takes too long to stabilise so it's a less entertaining simulation. The low resistance load might play a part too.
