This circuit maintains a constant current output even with different no. of LEDS as load. Useful for various use  among other things ex. LED driver you can keep adding LEDs without changing the resistance value, the circuit automatically adjusts. Observe closely what happens to the current through the LEDs as you close/open the LED switches. 

Question: What is the best way to change the brightness of the LEDs? What happens if you add more LEDs?

if you are lucky and have a 48V supply, then with 1800 Ohm ~1Watt resistor will also do the job. Not as accuarte as a transistor current source can do, but with less effort http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4527059670663168
