A transformerless 12V power supply circuit. For reference, please check this link: http://www.electroschematics.com/5678/capacitor-power-supply/

While it can be done, these type of circuits are not used in industry because they are dangerous. Besides that check the current and voltage drop of the 100Ohm resistor in the AC circuit, over 1A peek and dropping over 100V, that requires a resistor of over 100W. Makes a good heater.

These circuits were actually very common in early European TV industry. A lot of the early tube tv sets used direct mains rectification to power the circuits inside. Of course extensive measures were taken to minimize the shock hazzard, like for instance when you remove the back cover of the tv to inspect the circuits inside, the power cord would automatically disconnect the mains from the set. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this unless you plan on making a permanent installation of the circuit where you can set the ground/phase position properly and not worry about electrocution so much

The 100ohm resistor dissipates 27W which in my opinion is a complete waste of energy :)

There are perfectly good reasons for why certain individuals should experiment with live mains electricity. For example, tyrants, bad politicians and many world leaders might try this as therapy. A kind of cathartic release of psychosis or other problem might occur. However, this is not advisable for electronic engineering types.
