This simulates a spark gap, and even has a delayed response so that it takes a few cycles to form at high frequency and stays formed when the high frequency signal crosses 0V because there’s not enough time to dissipate, but there is no delay at low frequencies, so it forms immediately and dissipates each time it crosses zero.
