Very good circuit, I was half way through trying to debug your original circuit when I had to go back and compare it with yours,and found that you had already done it. I was still interested in using the circuit without a second power supply, and if possible do away with the logic chips, here is my effort. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5848798391959552

I have just debugging the original circuit, the fix turned out to be quite simple, put the gate trigger to discharge pin on the 555, also increase the two drain pull down resistors to be 100k. That fixed it. I tried to eliminate them altogether, but left the circuit a bit twitchy when reversing. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/6613519466496000
