Op amp ... equilibrium is kept, as the output raises inversely proportional to the input, always ensuring the midpoint between the two resistors, ergo the inverting input, is kept at the same value as the non-inverting input (ground, in this instance). It's like a seesaw, where the fulcrum of said seesaw is analogous to inverting input, no matter how high one person goes on one end, the equal and exact opposite direction of travel is seen on the opposite end, ergo the fulcrum has to remain at the same fixed point, no matter what.
