A simple yet quite capable ADC for simple home "hobbyist" projects.  Bit resolution can be increased easily.

Bit resolution cannot be increased easily because R2R ladders rely on a very small tolerance. You need lazer trimming to have them work at 8 or higher. 5% tolerance you can get 3 bits.

That actually true a perfectly matched ladder is required. But for todays technology it's not a big deal 4,8,12 step integrated ladders typically used for mass pull downs or pull ups for digital chips are also produced in ultimate tight tolerance already forming r2 inside chip. Yes they cost more than ordinary low tolerance puller resistor packs.
