They're just like transistors, but don't take any current at the "base", and are based around voltage rather than current. So, if you put 1V between the "base" and the "emitter", then it will have a certain resistance between the "collector" and "emitter", not current, but resistance. If you do the same thing but with 2 volts instead of 1, then you will get half the resistance. None of this is exact, of course. Also, it has different names for its three inputs/outputs. I think the "base" is called the gate, the "collector" is called the source, and the "emitter" is called the drain.
