Is there anyway you can simulate a true Thyristor as the transistors don't really work correctly because it should stay switched off until the ac waveform goes negative.

Nope the transistors are just fine. Check you bridge rectifier again, it's not wired correctly.

The bridge rectifier is wired correctly for the application.
