Seems 120 volts to 617 volts is not going help much. Isolation transformer is needed at high voltage to have safeguards.

Well, the idea is to vary the turns on the coil closest to ground to vary your voltage at the center "tap" of the, essentially, single coil transformer. I just had it set to a high voltage to demonstrate that it can, indeed, transform the input voltage even though there is only a single coil in this setup. I am sure you are right about safety, but I really just wanted to see if I could mock up a variac using EC, though EC does not have a variac component itself.
