v2 seems to kill EC for some reason.

I always prefer version 2 since it shows how you’d physically wire between the two switches with a single 3-core cable. The problem you’re seeing is because components in EC are ‘perfect’ and it doesn’t like you shorting out the switches. If you add a tiny resistors (say 10 milliOhm) in place of the direct wire links between the switches to represent switch contact resistance (or cable resistance) the problem is solved.

In fact only one tiny resistor is needed, in between the central switch contacts.
