Apple really don't like to admit it - but they like to sell 'branded' or 'official' charging cables. see this blog online http://www.angelsr4life.co.uk/poor-quality-usb-charging-cable it shows pict's where the USB cable has inbuilt components that allow 'intelligent' charging. Really it just allows it to charge faster! the 'low quality' cable the iphones/ipads recognises and charges very slowly. Just another way to make money :-(
