Finally! I had to adjust the wiper away from 50%, which is more than a little bit wierd because 50% is a suitable position for this circuit to show hysteresis. It's like the simulator is designed to make it possible to balance a pencil on its point, rather than being realistic. I suspect noise would help, and I don't mean by wiggling the device, which is unavailable in the Kindle version anyway. There should be a little noise all the time.

I wonder if putting in microvolt oscillating sources would help... maybe, with resistors too.
