This is a crude version of an ECU using 555timer circuit to control the spark plugs, the LED's represent individual cylinder spark plugs in a V8 engine. Decrease capacitance of the first capacitor to speed up the engine, have fun!

Most ignition systems have a ignition switched power to the ignition coil and the computer controls ground. If you created a circuit that pulses ground you could make this work using 8 individual coils.

Engines don't lite four cylinders at a time though...

Its a V8, lights up 2cylinders in each line at a time. Don't v8's work like that?

The sequence is more like a random one. Its spread around the block to avoid resonances. Suppose you would fire form left to right, you would have a big wave of mass moving and cause a shaking motor.

Exactly. The purpose of offsetting the firing of cylinders is to keep the engine in relative balance. If this wasn't done, the force generated by the motion of the pistons would shake the motor right off the chassis! Perhaps violently so..

Missing the point people.
