1) Limit the current for each LED. As it is now, the left one will fail. That's what it means when the light looks like an X. 2) A short is created when the top switch is down and the bottom switch is up. That's potentially going to put a lot of current through the diode (which you really don't need in the first place). Depending on the diode you use, it could fail as well.
