Transformerless Power Supply 1

Okay someone posted another wrong circuit with a diode bridge and all, and i though we should clear the misunderstanding once and for all. The first thing we should realize is that a simple capacitor can't separate the mains from the circuit as a transformer can. There is no galvanic separation, therefore the mains ground position will influence the circuit (flip the switch). Although the output will still have a potential difference of 12V some parts of the circuit will become at mains potential. Furthermore the capacitor can limit the current only in an ideal environment. In reality mains is full of noise and high frequency harmonics, at which the capacitor will appear to have a lot less reactance. At 50Hz and 470nF the reactance is ~6.8k. That's why you need to add a current limiting resistor in series, because a resistor will have equal resistance for all the harmonics. It does dissipate much power though (around 3.5W). This types of circuits are very inefficient, and can sometimes lead to inefficiencies of single digit %. Not to mention they're extremely dangerous. Old vacuum tube TV's sometimes used these circuits, and were often supplied with many fail-safes and protection circuitry to limit the electrocution risk.

Months ago I tried to power chinese digital voltmeter/ammeter with this kind of power supply: for some models worked fine, for others less, they were unstable or totally disturbed by supply. I think It depends from input filters inside those instruments.

What input filter does not get crazy of your unknow voltage supply? Any more facts from you?! Or just blabla giowix?

Ohhhh.... we have mister "I know all" , the men that enjoy only to can say stupid to everyone, which great honor .... but unfortunately I was not talking with you.

You humanistic stories from your childhood are just blabla and show how arrogant you are today. Check your propaganda thread for Igor - LOL

What are you people talking about :D

Giowix has a talent to not talk about electronic, sorry buggzy but he is a pain in the @$$. He seems to be a student from lenny.

Interesting, I've never noticed any of his circuits. Okay 👌

It sounds like a joke, that you tell arrogant to another ... I don't ask nothing to you, so what do you want by me? Keep calm, turn on your radiator, fire a cigar and at least this time put it in right hole, the mouth, otherwise it's normal to be so acid

Wow what a humanist you are. Being rude 100% / electronic ZERO

I'not interested on your opinion about me, essentially because I know it's based on any real knowledge of me. And I have more interesting things to do in my life than write again to you or use this app 24 hours/day, weekend included, like seems you do. Haven't you a work or a family, childrens etc?

I have a beautiful lovely wife and a big family and i do not need to work, cuz i did already in my life. And it was you who was talking about me and gave opinions. And belief me I really dont care lenny trolls like you a lot. Its more fun to gotcha a humanist like you fraud.

I'm inclined to agree with Hurz, this is an electronic circuit app, I'd like to see more interesting circuits here, and people enriching their knowledge, than to read about someone's life or someone arguing about something. I mean an argument about some circuit or something ia always beneficial, to learn new stuff and all, but all other yackerings are not for this app, sorry ;) anyway hurz I've been meaning to ask, what exactly is your speciality, or are you self taught?

You want me to publish my CV here?
