Wouldn’t 500ohm for the resistor value be better since the LED only needs 20mA to fully conduct?

Yes it would, I just happened to have a bunch of resistors of the other value to drive 32 leds through a pico with MCP23017s. Now I'm looking to sense a +15V source via GPIOs without blowing up the pico.
