Flashing light - transistor

Basic flashing lightbulb using a transistor like a relay.  I am no circuit builder and am simply trying to better understand a transistor.  I also tried an LED in this circuit but could not light it up.  I am completely uneducated in electronics and circuit building.  I am just very interested and like to tinker.
