What purpose does that transformer serve there? Instead of that, you may use a separate inductor for filtering out the fundamental.

Yeah. I also thought of using an underdamped LC LPF but I was too lazy. I like low inductance values so that the relatively high capacitor values would increase the selectivity.

The main problem that I understand it's that the 555 timer output distorts at about 80mA
