It does what it says: Smooth color changes of an RGB LED. Speed is adjusted by the pot on the left.

Could you make the patterns random

I don't know, did not think about a random control yet. Nice thing, maybe someone got an ideal?! I will think about it.

Nice work, I have a question though .. What's the use of the two branches of 1k ohm resistor in series with a diode ?!

These resistors give a small precharge current to the capacitors of the next LED stage. This make them response faster on a high signal and the next LED illuminates earlier. Without diodes and resistors it takes longer for the LEDs to light up cause the capacitors have to be charged first .
