There's no 'switch' taking place a reverse zener will give the effect

You're kidding, right? When the switch is closed, it takes a moment (determined by RC) to charge the capacitor enough to turn on the transistor. When the switch is opened, the capacitor will slowly discharge, keeping the transistor turned on for a moment after the switch had been opened. This is one of the simplest soft (aka delay) switch circuits there is. Is basic, and well known. How is a reversed zener going to give you a soft on/off in this configuration?
