This circuit is a simple 8 bit Digital to analog converter with Direct Digital Synthesis using a 555 timer.

8 bjt's driven sequential from an analogue signal gives in best case 3bit resolution. And "DDS" sounds nice but more common would be to say its suppose to be ordinary PWM. Which btw seems to only have two states one close to 2V input and the 2. below this voltage. Keep it up.
