The Raspberry Pi 2 GPIO pins output 3,3V max. 500mA. To use a higher voltage or more current we need a voltage level converter. The Transistor as Switch is the voltage level converter. Isnt it supposed to sink the load and take output from collecter? You would have 5v level high and aprox 20mV level low

500mA sounds quite a lot for a single pin. I guess this is the sum current limit for all gpios in total. A single gpio probably source max 40mA. Check spec...

@hurz yeah it sounds logic that all the pins together have a 500mA current limit (the Raspberry Pi itself is low-energy, so having a lot of pins everyone with 500mA would not be possible).
