There are many reasons why leds make poor and completely ineffective rectifiers. They are rectifiers. So the purpose of a diode rectifier is one to conduct forward direction current (so do LEDs). Diodes ALSO prevent or block reverse direction voltages (simple for a diode). Whereas leds will fail after a short time due their construction. So, leds design to emit light and diodes to control voltage AND current flow.
