EveryCircuit center-tapped transformer oddity

For whatever reason, the center tap of the transformer has a series inductance equal to one quarter the primary inductance (the primary winding being the center tapped winding). On the left is a 1:1 center-tapped transformer model with an inductance of 10H and an extra inductance of 2.5H in series with the center tap and on the right is a 1:1 EveryCircuit™ center-tapped transformer of 10H. As you can see, both behave identically showing the the EC transformer has a hidden 2.5H inductor in series with the center tap.

This makes it useless as a 4:1 wired bifilar wound transformer. The normal assumption is that each length of winding is the same, thus producing a representation trifilar wound transformer. When this is not true then we assume that the centre tapped side is formed by two half lengths of the non tapped side. Here I refer to one winding per side.

J9, I fully agree with your findings of a -f up within the EC tapped transformer.

I think what happened is that they wanted to split the 10H winding in two so they expected each half to have 5H but when it had only 2.5H (but the two together still had the full 10H) they patched it by adding in the missing 2.5H to the center tap so that the two halves in series are 10H and one half on it’s own would have 2.5H + 2.5H = 5H. Pretty dirty patch really, and demonstrates a lack of understanding of what they’re actually simulating.

This truly is horrible
