Circuit Overview: NE555 PWM DC Motor Controller This circuit is an adjustable Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) speed controller designed to drive a low-to-medium power DC motor (#M1) using a classic 555 timer integrated circuit (#U1). Instead of varying the voltage to change the motor speed—which reduces torque and wastes energy as heat—this circuit switches the motor fully ON and fully OFF at a high frequency. By adjusting the ratio of "ON" time to "OFF" time (the duty cycle), the average power delivered to the motor changes, allowing for smooth speed control from near 0% to 100% while maintaining high torque. How It Works • The Control Heart (#U1): The 555 timer is configured as an astable multivibrator. It constantly generates square-wave voltage pulses at its output pin (Pin 3). • The Speed Dial (#W1 & #D2): The potentiometer #W1 paired with steering diode #D2 splits the timing paths. Turning the dial alters how fast timing capacitor #C1 charges versus how fast it discharges. This directly changes the PWM duty cycle without causing drastic shifts in the operating frequency. • The Power Amplifiers (#Q1 & #Q2): The 555 timer cannot supply enough current to run a motor directly. Pin 3 drives a small-signal pre-amplifier transistor (#Q1), which turns on the rugged power driver transistor (#Q2). #Q2 acts as a high-current electronic switch, connecting the negative terminal of the motor (#M1) to the ground whenever the PWM pulse goes high. • Power Protection & Isolation (#D1, #C4, #D3): Motors are electrically noisy loads. #D1 and #C4 isolate and stabilize the power supply going to the sensitive 555 timer so it does not glitch or reset. Meanwhile, the flyback diode #D3 safely absorbs dangerous high-voltage spikes created by the motor's magnetic coils when it switches off. Search @Stoners123 in the community tab, for more circuits..
