if the power supply is not up to the task of driving the flyback, voltage will droop and sag and affect the operation of the 555 and the mosfet.

Make the blocking caps at CTRL input much higher e.g. 10uF and the internal threshold of NE555 dont follow the voltage drops. Hope this h.... ;-)

BTW the current is close to 5A this makes a drop of about 5V at your both resistors. I would not expect a working 555 at those noise supply conditions. At least you should remove the resistor at ground and add it to the plus line one. As long you want a internal resistive model of your power supply one resistor is enough. No need to put one more in ground line. Anyway, 555 as I found out 555 has its own ground references internaly (how bad is thsi?) so with a resistor 500m at ground it makes groundbouncing perfect! I hope Igor will fix this and reference to groundPIN instead to EC ground symbol :-( to e.g. be able to build symetrical supply circuits with 555.
