This sensor can detect everything non-conductive!!! 1pF capacitor are just two wires hanging around. If you place something non-conductive between them, capacitace will rise (simulated by the cap in parallel with the switch). The sensor detects increases of capacitance at the input, so it triggers and the lamp glows.
