One switch could be across the room from the other switch.  The light could be switched on or off from either switch

This is called a 3 way switch.. at least in my part of the world. It's common to use for hallways or large rooms with 2 or more access points. For hallways especially, sometimes it's desirable to switch the lights from some intermediate point(s) also, in which case you'd use a 4 way switch to cross connect the traveller wires.
