History of the relay

In 1809 Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring designed an electrolytic relay as part of his electrochemical telegraph. The humble relay has a fascinating history beginning with Thomas Von Sömmerring and his electrochemical telegraph which necessitated his design an electrolytic relay, although there are other theories concerning the original inventor of the relay. Some believe that Joseph Henry invented the relay in 1835 while working on his electrical telegraph. Edward Davy is also believed to the pioneer and inventor of the relay in 1835. However, Samuel Morse filed a telegraph patent in 1840 which included a detailed working description of the relay. Samuel Morse described the relay as a "digital amplifier" which repeated the telegraph signal thus allowing signals to be transmitted at great distances. Since 1860, the word "relay" was synonymous with electromagnetic operations.
