Increase both 10K resistors to 11.1K and the LED’s will begin flashing within a few seconds...

How come it starts blinking even tough all the components are identical? I was under the impression that the reason why this circuit starts to oscillate is because one of the transistors opens sooner due to tolerances etc.

In real life the components are never exactly the same, so whatever side allows the greater current will turn on first. In the simulator, I'm assuming that it scans a circuit from left to right, so unless a circuit is highly biased on the right hand side it will tend to turn the left hand side on first because it is the side that has been evaluated first.
