yes that's exactly the thing what the circuit's doing :)

if the zenner is placed in series then it will change the switch on voltage from 2v to 4v

Seriously.. whats the point here? Lower the resistance and your led burns out. Increase the zener breakdown voltage and your led will only drop it's rated voltage. Try again?
