In forward direction LEDs drop 2 to 3V which is for an input voltage around 5V quite significant. But tune the input voltage up to much more then 5V is also a bad idea, cuz LEDs are not made to withstand reverse voltage to good. They are mostly only specified to withstand 5V, more is on your own risk. So better use standard 1n4148 diodes or shottky ones.
