Coils tend to resist changes in current. When you suddenly disconnect the coil from power a current appears in the coil, flowing in tge same direction. The energy feeding this current comes from the magnetic field around the coil, that is being dissipated. Since one end of tge coil is on ground, its gonna be by definition always at zero volts, and since current is flowing downwards in the coil, a negative voltage must appear in the wire that joins the led and coil. Thanks to the resistor the voltage is not shorted with the voltage power supply and can flow through the led.

Read the description in my copy of your circuit. I hope that it helps. _ _ http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5222812351201280
