Left VS is carrier and the right is signal in. 
Found this in an old issiue of Stompboxology about ring modulators - great read! Google it and you will find it somwhere.. :)

Nice mixer, looks like the Howard Jone cell, I wonder why the tail transistor of the rightmost differential pair is not connected to the input, I'd I though the purpose of having a double pair is to connect the input differentially
