I'm very new to this kind of thing so any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I've been fiddling with values and scoping different points. The voltage source in the center is supposed to be the mic.

Here is a circuit to experiment with, it might help you understand how things work. If the signal is taken Off the collector of a transistor it is normally a voltage amplifier, if taken off the emitter it is normally a current amplifier. The two resistors after the first capacitor set the DC biasing level around which the AC input signal operates. The resistor after the output capacitor looses the DC level shift. Experiment and see what changes in component values do. You may have to re-power the circuit to get a proper indication. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5664209172168704

You propably just missed a 'k' from your original schematics. Instead of 220Ohm it might be 220kOhm which is a factor of 1000 higher. Check the mic voltage here which is just a few mV http://everycircuit.com/circuit/4985364358103040

Thanks! I'll experiment a bit and see what I can learn
